This official Michigan Historic Site was not only the county jail but the Sheriff’s residence from 1893 to 1965.
The fence located around the premises is railing from the former Maple Street bridge. It is available for tours by appointment.

Maple Street and Michigan Ave, Big Rapids

The Fairman building, constructed in 1880, is one of the first buildings of downtown Big Rapids. The Nisbett building was later constructed in 1886. The main floors were used commercially for shops and offices while the second floors housed apartments.
As of August 2003, an affordable senior development and historic restoration has been beautifully created.

The museum occupies the former home of Fitch Phelps, a Big Rapids lumberman. It is the home of many historical displays telling the story of the Mecosta County area as well as research materials from the area’s historical background.
The museum hosts private tours upon request.
Tubbs Lake St. Forest Campground at Martiny Flooding Area, (231) 832-3246. Tubbs lake has rustic campgrounds and features a chain of 8 lakes. A unique feature of Tubbs Lake is its naturally occurring stand of wild rice. Eagles, wood ducks, osprey, swans and a wide variety of fish inhabit the area.
